West Campus Move Out

One of the most chaotic seasons of West Campus is Move Out Week, generally defined as the week around August 1.

While some people move out after UT lets out in May, the last weekend of July is the big move out weekend, with people literally moving out up until the final minutes of July 31.

Sorry—San Pedro is closed today.

Did you want to drive there?

The streets are crowded with vehicles as professional movers, parents and friends all haul students’ belongings in every manner of vehicle. The streets are lined with rented trucks, borrowed pickups, and parents’ SUVs, and people are moving any way they can. This week I’ve seen people moving furniture in and on top of every model of car—the funniest was a small car with a young woman jogging behind it holding a mattress that didn’t come close to fitting in the trunk. If only I had been able to snap a picture…

My other moving van is a scooter.

I also saw people moving via scooter, bicycle trailer, livestock trailer, and desk chair—one guy was pushing a desk chair down the block piled high with bins and boxes. Just about every pickup truck has at least one person sitting on the furniture in the back.

Go find some treasures.

Massive amounts of furniture and trash are piled at curbs and around dumpsters. Last year, the city of Austin started a program to facilitate reuse of items. While this did cut down on the discard piles, there are still tons of items left out, and folks are still circling the neighborhood scavenging treasures.

This will go on for another couple of days, before Move In (and Rush) season starts.
